First Alert RD1 Radon Gas Test Kit

First Alert RD1 Radon Gas Test Kit Review. Short term test takes only 2 to 3 days in home. Charcoal test kit traps particle traces. Price includes lab analysis by an EPA listed lab and follow up recommendations. Safe and easy to use....

"Great kit - other guy is an idiot" 2005-02-05
By Galileo Galilei (Frostbite Falls, MN USA)

Here's a clue for the other reviewer: if you need to do 2 tests then you need to buy 2 kits.

Here's another clue: if you need a timely response then check before you buy. If your realtor can't help you - get a new realtor!

This kit is easy to use, simple instructions, and accurate results. The main point that I appreciate is that they don't try to nail you with extra lab costs after purchase like some other kits I've seen.

By kristadm (Lakewood, CA United States)

Be aware that you need to put the test in the middle of the room and leave it for 2-3 days (not easy when you have toddlers). Also, it only covers that area, so you may need more than one test.

"Easy to use. Includes lab test." 2008-04-04
By Wayne (MD USA)

The kit has easy to follow instructions. You set it in an appropriate place, wait 48 hours, fill out a form, put everything in a supplied envelope, add 2 stamps, and send it out. If a few weeks your result arrives. In my case I had to call to get it but it was available on-line.

NOTE - other products want $ for the lab test. This product includes it.

"First Alert Model RD1 Radon Gas Test Kit" 2009-03-26
By Gregory Sheppard (Rockville, Md.)

I was very impressed with this test kit. I ordered from Amazon and it arrived in 5 days. I did order with some other items so I was able to take avantage of the Amazon free shipping. Very simple to use with there easy to understand instructions. I used this tester in my basement and left it for two days. The instructions was to put 3 first class stamps ($1.26) for mailing back to lab and since no stamps went to the post office. I was told it would cost me $1.34 to mail by first class. Clerk saw what First Alert said about postage and told me that they were wrong and that if I had sent it with only 3 stamps it might have gone thru or it could have been returned to me for not enough postage (at least she was honest about this). Because of the thickness of the envelope and the nature of the item was the reason for the increase postage. It took 7 days to receive my report from Md. to Tx. by way of email. You can also request your report by mail. I was very impressed also by the very detail report with additional detail information about radon gas.

 "Great value" 2009-02-18
By Anthony Filardi (Allentown, PA)

Most of the Radon Kits at the local big box stores cost about $5 more than this kit PLUS you had to add another $10 for the actual test. I found this kit to be an excellent value with easy directions. The only add'l cost was for 2 postage stamps.

Kidde KN-COSM-IB Hardwire Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup and Voice Warning, Interconnectable

|

Kidde KN-COSM-IB Hardwire Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup and Voice Warning, Interconnectable Review. Untitled Document The KN-COSM-IB combines a Carbon Monoxide and Ionization Smoke Alarm, providing two important safety devices in a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that helps eliminate confusion, as it tells you if its detected fire or carbon monoxide, or even if it needs a new battery. This alarm has 9 volt battery backup, which protects you and your family - even during a power outage when many incidences occur. The alarm also allows you to easily silence nuisance alarms using its convenient Smart Hush feature. This talking combo alarm is powered by your home’s electricity and can interconnect with other smoke alarms in your home. Experts recommend interconnected alarms, because when one sounds, they all sound, providing an early warning against fire by dramatically increasing your ability to hear an alarm anywhere in your home, regardless of where the fire starts. By Mark A. Rossini

The product is a great idea to combine both detectors in one. The voice portion that sounds is quite clear as to whether it is smoke or carbon monoxide. In addition the installation was quite easy for the do it yourselfer. Lastly, it was delivered with a battery installed...what a novel idea!!

 "Operates as specified" 2007-11-06
By K. M. (Detroit, Michigan)

This seems to be working as the manual says. The only problem is that I've had a few false positives. This is because that the manual states that this unit should not be within 3 feet of the bathroom entryway. I'm going to assume that this is due to fact that the heat or steam from opening the door after a shower/bath would set it off. And it does. I'm not saying that this is a problem, I'm glad that it is that sensitive. But I didn't install it to the recommended directions and this is the result. So with this result I'm going to say that this unit has been tested thoroughly and they have put much effort into the day to day operations of this unit. As for the Carbon monoxide I can't say how it would react in a real life situation. But I would hope that if the fire portion of the unit was this well designed then the Carbon Monoxide should perform just as well.

I could recommend this unit for anyone looking not just for piece of mind for fire detection but if they also wanted to detect carbon monoxide.

"Great Replacement for Smoke Detector" 2007-11-05
By Mr. Anderson

Replaced a 10 year old BRK Smoke Detector...This Kidde is Great! Hookup took less than 5 minutes, just replaced old pigtail connector, with the included Kidde connectors. The Kidde base feels more sturdy and the sure-lock twist design guaranteed a perfect fit. The Kids love the "voice" warnings (test mode) for Fire & Carbon Monoxide...I also love the visible 120v power indication (green light). Did I mention that Amazon.com has the best price on this unit...yeah, pick one up!

 "Peace of mind" 2008-10-22
By Christopher Powell (Ohio)

For those concerned about previous mfr date issues with reviews, my units were manufactured within 45 days of my purchase date -- which is actually extremely reasonable. I'm guessing that wherever these are manufactured, they are taking a boat trip at least once before hitting a warehouse to wait for me to purchase.

I recently replaced my 10 year old BRK detectors around my entire house. I installed the Kidde PI2000 dual sensor detector in each beadroom and a Kidde KN-COSM-IB smoke and carbon dioxide detector in the hallways in the basement, first and second floor hallways.

I researched first alert, brk, and kidde, mostly because I could see them at my local big box hardware store. I chose Kidde becuase it had more features for the wired-in detectors than both first alert and brk. First alert appears to have focused their current lines on battery only units and wireless communications. Brk also had limited options in dual sensors or combo CO detectors in a wired setting. Since neither first alert or brk could supply both a photo sensor/ion wired unit AND a dual CO and smoke wired detector that communicated together, I chose kidde detectors. I wanted them all to communicate and mixing and matching product vendors makes communications between the units impossible.

There are no pretty dual detectors that exist on the market. These are nice and boring and don't draw attention. They have a working hush button. That's a new feature that I appreciate. I haven't ripped one of these off the ceiling once yet to get them to stop their alarms.

I've never done a smoke or CO test. I'll let the experts run those tests. My only tests are using the test button. But it works as identified and is loud. The voice alarms in the COSM unit is good for the hallways and will supplement the normal alarm well. Children are reported to respond faster to "Fire!, Fire!". I've been know to sleep through my daughter's baby monitor on one of her bad nights... There's no way I'm not going to hear both the voice and the piercing alarms

DIY info:

Since I was replacing an existing AC wired solution, I wanted to continue to have the security of both AC power and battery backup. The best feature by far of this wired in solution is that all detectors are wired to communicate together. If my basement CO detector goes off, then the other two CO detectors also sound with an alarm and a voice indicator. When any of the smoke detectors trip, all detectors sound, and the hallway units voice alert "Fire!, Fire!". This connection between detectors will ensure that I know in the middle of the night if I have a fire in the basement... My house is well soundproofed between floors.

In replacing the existing brk wired in units with the Kidde detectors, I had to remove the existing collars and wired in "tails" since the existing ones were not compatible with the Kiddes. You can buy an adapter to convert from the BRK style of tail to the Kidde, but I considered that a waste of money. In my house, all of the smoke detectors are on the same electrical circuit and rewiring the tails and installing the detectors was a matter of ensuring the circuit was off, removeing 3 wire nuts, removing the existing tail, then twisting the new tail into the existing leads and putting the wire nuts back on. less than 3 minutes of work.

THe collar was easy to replace. A cordless screwdriver to loosen (not remove) the 2 J-box screws, twist and pull the brk collar off, add the Kidde collar, then tighten the screws.

All in all less than 5 minutes per detector... replaceing 7 detectors took less than an hour of work and I made sure to test each one for communications with the other units.

For the single detector that I have close to the peak of a cathedral ceiling I replaced the nice alkaline 9v that shipped with the PI2000 with an Ultralife Lithium 9v... they are made specifically for smoke detectors and are claimed to at least double the lifespan of a alkaline up to 10 years.... I'll let you know in ten years if its true. In any case I don't expect to have to change that high detector's battery for years now.

Remember that smoke detectors have to be replaced every 10 years.. units that detect CO will have to be replaced after 5yrs... its a chemical based sensor.

This unit will detect carbon monoxide and fires. Here is what I did in our house... Our Bedroom, Daughters bedroom and top of the stairs we have the regular detector with a light to help us see to get out. Our spare room at the top of the stairs has a regular detector that also has the wireless feature but also hardwires in to all the others. In our bathroom we have a plug in wireless fire alarm. It gets the signal from the one in the spare room if ANY of our detectors goes off. It makes a verbal announcement that there is a fire. It is very loud and can easily be heard if you are in the shower even with a radio on. In the office at the top of the stairs we have a dual sensor alarm so if either type of fire (slow or fast buring) is detected all alarms will go off. Lastly in the hallway at the bottom of our stairs we have this detector that does smoke and carbon monoxide. If it detects either it will set off all alarms including the one in the bathroom. I feel like we are covered in everyway possible. I feel all of these are much better than what was installed when we built the house 7 years ago. My father was a firefighter for 25 years and we live in a town that relies only on volunteers so I take these detectors very seriously. We have also had a very scary false alarm at 2am before. I can not imagine actually having your house burn down, the false alarm was terrifying enough. But if something terrible was to happen I want every chance to get my family out safe.

REMEMBER though that carbon monoxide should be detected at floor level. We also have a battery powered carbon monoxide detector in the room with our fireplace. We rely on this unit to wake us up if we are a sleep. It will still reach this detector before it reaches our bedrooms. An alarm is your only hope for carbon monoxide.

"Bad Ice Cubes? Get this" 2008-06-29
By Damon.D (Pittsburgh,PA)

My Ice Cube make was having major problems. Ice Cubes were hollow and Ice was sticking on the White Prongs that pop the cubes out. I called Amana and they were no help so I figured that the Cube maker was not getting enough water flow.

I replaced with this filter and now the Ice Cube maker is like new and the water shoots out of the dispenser like crazy. What used to take 25-30 seconds to fill a glass of water now takes 3-5 seconds.

So if you are having Ice Cube issues or poor water flow buy this.

It's a little expensive for a water filter but it's worth it.

Oh and the water tastes good too.

I looked for years for something like this to help protect my frost-sensitive plants! I have been using it with C9 Christmas lights and a cover (sheet, blanket or pool cover) on my plants and haven't lost one plant since. It has saved me a lot of money since I don't have to put the lights on a timer all night long like I used to. It's really worth buying!

 "Endless power!" 2008-08-28
By A_G (CA United States)

Really, these batteries provide seemingly endless power. They hold their charge for weeks with very little loss. I can use one battery for drilling and driving throughout an entire (moderately sized) project. They are extremely lightweight and charge in twenty minutes or less usually (in hot weather it takes longer). All three of mine slide on and off easily, with no issues of binding or falling off. With all the praise comes a VERY important caveat. DO NOT run these batteries into the ground. The instructions state that as soon as you notice a loss of power, stop and charge. If you over-discharge Li-Ion batteries, you can seriously degrade the life of the battery. These batteries are 1/3 cheaper on Amazon.com than at the home centers, so buy from here! Also, only the cells themselves are made in Japan, all other parts are made and final assembly is in China.

"Excellent batteries as compared to other high-end brands" 2010-09-21
By Eric J. Olmstead

I have owned a set of Makita tools with the LXT batteries for a couple years now and I have noticed absolutely zero power loss or any other problems. I use them quite regularly whether building concrete forms, decks, remodels, etc. I can think of three things that may be happening to the batteries of those who have commented on bad performance or longevity; (1) Occasionally, batteries can be bad from the factory (I have yet to own a milwaukee tool with the new "V" or "M" series battery that holds up past a few months. I have both V28 and M12, and have had ALL packs replaced) (2) It is possible to have a bad charger which is damaging the batteries itself, or (3) Perhaps the users are taking them all the way to the point of stalling and complete discharge, and for that the batteries are truly not made to do. It is best that once you notice the battery pack is wearing down, to grab a fresh one and put the discharged on the charger to cool down and refresh. Also, if the batteries are being stored for most of their life, it is best to keep the charger plugged in and rotate batteries through it to keep everything active and refreshed. Lithium batteries have computer chips and sophisticated circuitry, allowing them to constantly be charged without damage. Ni-Cad on the other hand are not supposed to be charged over and over again because they typically have memory effects and lifetime charging limits. It is best to mostly, not completely, discharge a Ni-Cad before replacing back onto the charger. Because a consumer only has ultimate control of this last variable, it is a good idea to read the owners manual and find out what the manufacturer thinks is best operating practices. Only those who are using the batteries and tools know how they are being treated, and you may very well be doing everything right and not fall into this third category. Being that my kit is from a couple years ago, and my newest battery packs (purchased just for continued use because I have many LXT tools) were purchased last year sometime, it is possible that the newer batteries are of a lesser quality, and that would be unfortunate. What I can say is this; I own many Dewalt tools, which I have only had to replace a couple Ni-Cad battery packs in the past 5 years. (Dewalt tools are mostly made in Mexico) I have owned MANY Milwaukee tools in which their Ni-Cads held up pretty well, but their Li-Ion line is absolute crap. Several years ago when their tools were still made in the US, their quality was impeccable. Their tools are now made completely in China. (Yes, many of the Makitas are also) I own several Bosch as well, and their batteries and tools are right up there with Makita's quality. As far as Skil, Black and Decker, and any other cheaper or knock-off brand goes, I would personally never purchase them. For one, you are supporting China, and secondly you would be purchasing a tool that is undependable. Hitachi has an excellent warranty, and makes excellent air nailers, however I'm unsure of the quality you may find in their power tools, both corded and cordless. I hope this was helpful.

 "Excellent battery, amazing life" 2010-07-26
By Guard Dad (Southern NH)

I was just about to order another battery for my collection of LXT cordless tools, and I thought I would read a few of the reviews. I am really quite surprised by the 1 and 2 star ratings, with people complaining about the short run time life of these batteries. My experience is totally opposite.

I bought my first kit in October 2006, shortly after Makita released this LXT series. I was working at the time for a haunted attraction, we build the entire structure from buckets of sheetrock screws, and my old 12V Makita drill batteries were done, wouldn't hold a charge. I decided to upgrade to an impact driver as well as a new drill. I have used the daylights out of that impact driver, it's one of the best tool investments I've ever made (and I have a LOT of tools!). The original batteries from 2006 are still going strong, I really can't tell that they have aged at all. What I do now is buy another battery every year, knowing that eventually they will start to wear out but this way I won't be stranded with no batteries and having to make the dreaded decision "do I buy new batteries or just chuck the drill and buy a whole new kit". I engrave the purchase date into the battery when I get it so I can track their age. I now have 5 tools in the cordless LXT line, they are all awesome, I use them a LOT. I now work every weekend for Habitat for Humanity and almost without fail every weekend someone is begging to borrow my impact driver.

Not sure what is up with the problem batteries, but I thought I'd leave a positive review. I couldn't be happier with mine, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again (and I do). I actually bought a drill kit in this series for my son a few years ago, he is also very pleased with it.

By J. W. Nelson (Painted Post, NY United States)

It's a battery. It has held its charge. It has plenty of stored energy. It hasn't died yet (like two of it's smaller bothers have).

It is evidently pretty high tech. I brought the first smaller version that quit on me to a Makita repair center. The tech plugged it into his diagnostic do-hicky and said, "Gee, you've only had twelve cycles on this".

Braun Brita Patented KWF2 Water Filter (2-Pack) Review. As everyone knows good coffee starts with good beans and good water. I used to buy these filters locally for my Braun Flavor Select, but, when I moved, I could not find a source. I am so glad I've found them here because I wouldn't want to do without them.

Although the Flavor Select does come with a dummy cartridge to place where the filter belongs, it is well worth your while to use the water filters. I was going through coffee pots every couple of years because of hard water deposits in the lines - and vinegar cleanings did not help. The filters have kept my Braun brewing coffee without ever having to use vinegar or other methods of interior cleaning. While I can't say that my coffee tastes better, I can attest that these filters have lengthened the life of my brewer.

 "Life Safety" 2006-02-20
By D. Nelson (USA, Earth)

As a firefighter, I strongly reccomend escape ladders to people who live on or above the second floor. If a fire starts at night on the first floor smoke detectors on the second or third floors may or may not activate and wake up building occupants before superheated gasses and fire make escape through the first floor an impossability. Buy whatever brand you want but make sure it's appropriate for your specific needs. Ensure if you live on the third or fourth floor you buy a ladder that long or longer. Take into consideration overhangs under windows that will effect the length of the ladder. Make sure escape ladder fits the window. Use only if all other exits are blocked. Practice opening the ladder and dropping it out the window, but not using it.

 "A Proven Safety Tool" 2008-11-16
By J.D.P.

As a former firefighter, I can attest that there is no such thing as too much protection. The Kidde KL-2S 13 foot escape ladder or a good quality counterpart is a must have safety tool for any two story home. This product and others like it save lives.

Unlike previous heavy chain constructed models, this system is light, tangle free and easy to store. Weighing in at almost 17lbs this unit will hold up to 1000lbs. I highly recommend storing this ONE TIME USE LADDER in the vicinity of the designated escape window. As a ONE TIME USE LADDER do not pull the release strap unless it is an emergency. In the event of an emergency these simple steps will save lives.

1. Close the doors to the room before opening the escape

window to avoid intensifying a fire.

2. Open attachment hooks and extend center support.

3. Place hooks over window sill with ladder hanging on the

outside of the structure. Attach the white end of the hooks to

the inside wall. The red side of the hooks must be outside

the window.

4. Pull release strap to deploy ladder.(To be done only in

an actual emergency).

5. Carefully exit window onto ladder, holding attachment hooks

to provide stability.

6. When descending the ladder, keep your body close to the

ladder to maximize stability.

7. Carry children on the ladder only when it is absolutely necessary.

8. Avoid carrying pets or other objects on the ladder.

9. In family escape, the parent should exit first to stabilize the

ladder during the descent of children or elderly adults.

By kimberly blakely (winston salem, nc)

This is wonderful, we have one in each kids room we have practice drills and this is great we live in an apartment that has no back door so this is essential since all the bedrooms are in the back and we live on the 2nd floor.

"Finally a ladder that will help us escape" 2007-01-16
By A. Nicklas (DC)

Though we have not tested the ladder, as it has only one time use. It has been designed well with solid metal steps and a very small pakcing and storage size. Overall recommended to any that need an alternate escape route out of a house or townhome.

 "Seems well made" 2010-07-28
By Sarah Davis

I certainly hope that I never need to use this, but if I do, I feel confident climbing down on it. I believe some of the previous reviews complain that this ladder is for "one use only." I think there are two easy explanations for this:

1. If you do use it to escape a fire, its probably best not to use it again. You hopefully escaped early in the fire and the ladder took more heat, etc as the fire progressed. Its just safer to buy a new one.

2. Kiddie is protecting itself legally by instructing you not to open the ladder until you need it. Its pretty compactly packed and has been done that way to keep the ladder from tangling. If you do practice with it, it doesn't look that hard to pack back up. Just plan on it taking more than 5 minutes (a second person wouldn't hurt either).

I checked to make sure that the ladder was long enough (yes), but am against climbing down it until I need to. I'm 3 floors up and would rather not risk falling off the ladder until necessary. I can't see risking that with children either. Practice the escape plan, but skip the actual descent.

"Class II particulates = filtered particle size: Class II - 1 to 5 microns" 2007-01-20
By

The term, "Particulates" refers to particles of rust, dirt, sand, and sediment found in drinking water. Water that contains Particulates is typically cloudy, and as you might expect, tastes and smells "dirty". By themselves, Particulates are not known to cause any adverse health effects, but they can sometimes carry other harmful organic, inorganic, and microbiological contaminants through the drinking water system.

In general, better filters will remove finer particles. Each filter's ability to remove particulates is measured against a certain "particulate class", or particle size.

Class I - 0.5 to 1 micron

Class II - 1 to 5 microns

Class III - 5 to 15 microns

Where one micron is one millionth of a meter or approximately 1/25,000 of an inch.

For example, if a filter is rated to remove "95.1% of Particulates (Class II)", that just means that it will remove 95.1% of all particles that are between 1 and 5 microns in size

"Whirlpool Water for Kenmore Refrigerator" 2009-06-29
By D. Pratt (MI, USA)

We have a Sears Kenmore refrigerator model number 106.53582300 (made by Whirlpool) that we purchased from Sears. It has the round water filter in the base of the refrigerator that should be replaced every year. Sears sends post cards wanting to sell us a filter for $40 plus shipping. After some research we came across this one for less and it works superbly.

Highly recommended to save money over the Sears option.

By ROBERT OBRIEN (Fort Collins, Colorado)

This product represents great value for money and is etremely easy to install.

The manufacturer recommends changing every 6 months, but I'm sure it's 'water quality' dependent as my filters last at least 12 months (Fort Collins, CO has great water quality).

"Best filter & Amazon has best price" 2009-02-06
By zephyr (VA)

Saw cheaper brands, and did comparison research on what contaminants the off-brands filtered vs. the Whirlpool. If you're concerned about filtering heavy metals and chems out of your drinking water, the Whirlpool "cyst reducing" filter has better filtration specs than the cheaper off brands. Amazon's price was as cheap as any other place i could find--cheaper than most.
